MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Legislature’s budget committee has approved a bill that would boost funding for drug treatment programs.

Rep. John Nygren’s bill would increase treatment for drug treatment and diversion programs by $2 million per year. The money would come out of the Department of Health Services and go to the state Department of Justice to administer as grants to counties.

The bill is part of a package of legislation Nygren, a Marinette Republican, has introduced to slow the spread of heroin.

Democrats complained about spending the money given revenue projections that show the state will finish the current state budget with $70.2 million, down from earlier projections of $164.5 million. In the end, though, the committee approved the bill unanimously, setting up a full vote in the Assembly.
