SKOKIE, Ill. (AP) — The driver of a truck that slammed into an Illinois state trooper’s patrol car and killed him in 2003 has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Twenty-eight-year-old Andrew Bokelman of Wisconsin pleaded guilty Friday to driving a commercial vehicle while fatigued, driving longer than a 14-hour legal limit and filing a false work log to hide the fact.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports that the driver was sentenced in a Skokie, Ill., courtroom after the plea.

Bokelman fell asleep and veered to the side, striking trooper James Sauter’s squad car on Interstate 294 in the March 2013 crash.

Bokelman’s attorney, David Studenroth, said he tried to remove Sauter from his burning car, but was stopped by the flames.

He called it a “total tragedy all the way around.”
