MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A man convicted of beating his girlfriend’s 5-year-old son to death has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

But despite a jury finding him guilty of first-degree reckless homicide for the 2013 death of Brayden Turnbill, the Wisconsin State Journal reports that 26-year-old Dakota Black, of Sun Prairie, continued Friday to profess his innocence.

Brayden Turnbill was found barely breathing by his mother, Shannon Turnbill. Investigators said he suffered serious head injuries. He died at UW Hospital a few days later.

Black told Dane County Circuit Judge Stephen Ehlke that he’s the victim of a miscarriage of justice and did not kill Brayden.

Ehlke countered that he thought the evidence was overwhelming, and he said that boy’s injuries were massive.

Black has already filed a notice of appeal.
