MILWAUKEE (AP) — A trial has begun for a 22-year-old Milwaukee man charged in a toddler’s shooting death.
The trial for Darmequaye Cohill began Monday in a Milwaukee County courtroom and will continue Tuesday. He’s charged with first-degree reckless homicide and first-degree recklessly endangering safety, both with a dangerous weapon and as a party to a crime, in connection with the death of 13-month-old Bill Thao.
Cohill is accused of mistakenly shooting into a Milwaukee duplex over a drug-related dispute on Dec. 27, killing the boy as he played with toys in the living room.
His attorney told the jury that cellphone tower data will show Cohill wasn’t in the area at the time of the shooting.
He faces up to about 47 years in prison if convicted.
