RACINE, Wis. (AP) — A 28-year-old Racine man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the 2013 death of a 3-year-old boy in Mount Pleasant.

Judge Michael Piontek on Monday gave Marcus Johnson the toughest-possible penalty. Johnson pleaded guilty earlier this year to first-degree reckless homicide in the death of Hunter Wise.

The boy died on May 10, 2013, after he was scalded in the bathtub, allegedly as punishment for defecating in his pants.

Johnson was the boyfriend of the boy’s mother. The Journal Times reports the boy’s father, Joe Wise, told the court he had high hopes for his son but now has to live through every birthday and milestone without him.
