Court upholds conviction in Milwaukee crowd shooting

Listen to this articleMADISON, Wis. (AP) — A state appeals court says a man accused of shooting into a Milwaukee street party was properly convicted.
The July 4, 2008, shooting left four people dead. James Washington was one of three men accused of opening fire. He was sentenced to life following a jury trial.
Washington insisted the trial judge told jurors Wisconsin has no death penalty, making it more likely they would convict him; his attorney didn’t call a detective to testify; and the judge wrongly decided a witness recantation didn’t warrant a new trial.
The 1st District Court of Appeals ruled Thursday that Washington failed to explain why jurors were more likely to convict him, the detective’s testimony wasn’t crucial and the judge properly found the recantation unbelievable.
Washington’s attorney didn’t return a message.
