Bradford, PA (AP) — Wisconsin fire chief has been jailed overcharges that he stole more than $47,000 from his elderly aunt when he was working in Pennsylvania.

At the time, Richard Zmuda told Bradford police that he had “good intentions” when his aunt gave him permission to set up a bank account with proceeds from a $62,400 life insurance check for her father in February, according to the Bradford Era.

But, eventually, Zmuda felt entitled to spend some of the money on himself and the fire department, which is why Bradford police charged him Wednesday with theft by deception.

Zmuda was interim fire chief of the Pennsylvania city at the time. In August, he became fire chief in North Fond Du Lac, Wis., where he’s jailed pending extradition.

Court records don’t list a defense attorney.
