WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) — Authorities say a man has been shot in the leg during a struggle over a Waukesha County deputy’s gun at the county juvenile center.

The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department says the 34-year-old Hartland man was at the juvenile center Monday for a court hearing. The department says he tried to take the deputy’s gun just before 3 p.m. The gun went off during the struggle, hitting the man once in the leg.

The man was given medical aid by deputies at the center, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment. The 44-year-old deputy involved in the struggle was placed on standard administrative leave pending an investigation.

According to WITI-TV, Waukesha County Sheriff Eric Severson said during a Monday news conference that he wouldn’t discuss who fired the gun “at this point.”
