Milwaukee teen gets 45 years for homicide, sexual assault

MILWAUKEE (AP) — A 19-year-old Milwaukee man accused of raping his ex-girlfriend’s 15-year-old sister before killing her new boyfriend last January has been sentenced to 45 years in prison.

Markell Greer pleaded guilty in June to reduced charges. But the Journal Sentinel reports Greer still got a hefty sentence Thursday.

Judge Ellen Brostrom made the terms of the most serious charges — first-degree reckless homicide and second-degree sexual assault — run consecutively.

He initially faced other charges, including first-degree intentional homicide.

According to the complaint, Greer sexually assaulted and confined the girl for more than 12 hours before his 18-year-old ex-girlfriend, 30-year-old Nevelo Smith, and another girl returned home. According to the complaint, Greer shot Smith as he fled and held the others at gunpoint before they were able to escape.
