MADISON, Wis. (AP) — An Illinois man has been convicted in the fatal shooting of an Oregon man at a hotel in Madison.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports a jury found 43-year-old Marcius Lee guilty Monday night of first-degree intentional homicide in the July 2014 death of 46-year-old Robert France. A judge gave Lee a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

According to authorities, France had driven to Madison from Portland, Ore., to sell marijuana, and was believed to be carrying $30,000 to $40,000 in cash. Authorities say Lee shot France as he put luggage into his car, and that Lee had about $38,000 on him when he was arrested four days later in the Chicago area.

Defense attorney Terry Frederick argued evidence against Lee was shaky, and that another man who testified was more likely involved in the shooting.
