MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A former Dane County deputy has received a 120-day jail sentence for his relationship with a woman in sheriff’s custody who was at home on electronic monitoring.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports 43-year-old Jeffrey Hilgers was sentenced Tuesday. He was found guilty last month of sexual assault.
Hilgers was working as a deputy when the relationship with the woman began in 2013. They married after authorities discovered their relationship. Hilgers resigned in August 2013.
Deputy District Attorney Michelle Viste has said state law forbids sexual contact between jailers and inmates, even though the woman was at home as part of a drug and alcohol treatment program. Defense attorney Brian Hough said Hilgers didn’t use his job to form the relationship.
Hough says Hilgers has already started the appeals process.
