MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee aldermen are delaying a final decision on a proposal that would greatly reduce the fine for possessing a small amount of marijuana.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the Common Council voted for the delay Tuesday. The motion was backed by five council members, including Alderman Terry Witkowski. He said he supported delaying the measure so the council could get feedback from law enforcement and court officials.
The proposal would lower the maximum fine from $500 to $50 for possessing as much as 25 grams of marijuana. The measure was brought to the full council Tuesday after a committee led by Witkowski voted to hold off on it earlier this year.
A Wisconsin law enacted last year gave local governments more say on rules regarding marijuana possession.
