WHD adds attorneys to Litigation, Corporate and Finance groups

The law firm of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek has announced the addition of Richard Coad to its Litigation Practice Group, and Steven Laabs and Peter Walsh to its Corporate and Finance Practice Group.

Coad joins the Corporate Compliance and White Collar Defense Team in the Madison office, focusing his practice on white collar defense, internal investigations, federal and state appeals, defending professionals in actions against their professional licenses, and civil litigation.

He earned his law degree from William Mitchell College of Law.

Laabs joins the Corporate Transactions Team in the Milwaukee office where his practice focuses on representing companies and business owners in connection with a variety of corporate, commercial finance, and real estate transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, reorganizations, private placements, and business succession planning. He also assists entrepreneurs and emerging companies in connection with entity formation, governance, equity and debt financing, and other general business matters.

Laabs earned his law degree from Marquette University Law School. He was named an Up and Coming Lawyer by the Wisconsin Law Journal in 2013.

Walsh joins the Trusts & Estates and Trust, Estate and Fiduciary Litigation teams, and will be joining the firm’s Waukesha County office when it opens later this year. He focuses his practice on helping clients preserve family wealth through estate and asset protection planning, as well as representing individuals with inheritance litigation, tax and creditor disputes. He provides clients with legal assistance for dealing with the high costs of caring for an elderly or disabled family member and has litigated will and trust contests, as well as claims for breach of fiduciary duty, intentional interference with inheritance and undue influence.

He earned his law degree from DePaul University.

Michael Best earns EPA partner award

The law firm of Michael Best & Friedrich has again been designated by the Environmental Protection Agency as a WasteWise Partner.

The voluntary program asks that participants do what they can to prevent waste. That is, use only the material needed to get the job done and then recycle what waste cannot be prevented and buy recycled products.

Although participation in the WasteWise Program is voluntary, Michael Best takes its involvement seriously. A few of the waste reduction initiatives undertaken by the employees of Michael Best include:

  • Assuring that appropriately labeled bins are available in all offices and in all common areas that improve the effectiveness of the firm’s existing recycling efforts;
  • Providing collection bins that enable recycling and/or proper disposal of a broader range of our waste streams, such as used batteries; and
  • Recycling toner cartridges for printers.

Hupy and Abraham honored for best law website

HupyWebsiteHupy and Abraham has been honored for Best Website: Law at the 19th annual Webby Awards.

The Webby Awards are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences.

The firm has set a high standard for Internet marketing and development of one of the best websites in its industry. In 2014, the firm unveiled a more user-friendly interface to its website for easier navigation. Additionally, the State Bar of Wisconsin has listed the Hupy and Abraham blog as an active presence in the local legal community.

Davis & Kuelthau moves Oshkosh office

Davis & Kuelthau has moved its Oshkosh office to a new location.

After more than 15 years in the Oshkosh Office Center building downtown, the firm is now located in a newly renovated space in the Universal Business Park, 2905 Universal St., just blocks from U.S. 41.

Davis & Kuelthau also continues to expand its team in the Fox Valley. The firm has hired Courtney Hollander, a corporate associate located in Oshkosh who graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Law in December of 2014. Additional attorneys in Oshkosh include William Fischer, James Macy, Robert Mathers, Thomas Moniz and Steven Sorenson. Fox Valley services are also provided by the firm’s attorneys in Green Bay, Brookfield, Madison and Milwaukee. The Green Bay team includes Robert Burns, Timothy Cisler, Bruce Deadman, Mary Gerbig, James Kalny, Frank Kowalkowski, Thomas Rohan, Thomas Schober, Anthony Steffek, Adrian Ulatowski and William Woodward.

Hoff opens own law firm

Attorney Casey Hoff has opened his own law firm, Casey Hoff Attorney at Law, in downtown Sheboygan.

Since graduating from law school in 2010, Hoff has focused on criminal and drunk driving defense, and he continues that focus with his new firm in a statewide practice.

DeWitt welcomes Grawe to its Madison office

DeWitt Ross & Stevens has announced the addition of attorney Ben Grawe to its environmental team. He will be located in the firm’s Madison office.

Grawe focuses his practice in the environmental law arena; in particular, he specializes in environmental compliance and enforcement matters, with an emphasis on complex air, waste and permitting issues. He has extensive experience resolving environmental enforcement actions, negotiating settlements with state and federal agencies, and managing due diligence in the purchase and disposition of industrial assets.

Grawe also represents clients on remediation projects across the country, including at some of the largest Superfund sites, where he leads PRP groups in structuring solutions to complex environmental challenges.

He earned his law degree from Vermont Law School. He also earned a certificate in Environmental Studies from the University of Wisconsin’s Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies. He and his wife, Katie, have three children and live in Middleton.

Northwestern Mutual appoints Lyons to executive officer

Northwestern Mutual has promoted Stephanie Lyons to executive officer and vice president of enterprise risk assurance.

Lyons brings expertise and experience in strategy, risk management and regulatory matters. She joined Northwestern Mutual in 2008 as assistant general counsel, where she advised the company on a wide variety of investment transactions, risk management and regulatory matters.

Most recently, Lyons served as director of strategic planning and consulting in the corporate strategy department and was secretary for the executive leadership team. In this role, she supported senior leadership’s planning efforts to develop and execute long-term enterprise strategy.

Prior to joining Northwestern Mutual, Lyons was a shareholder with the Milwaukee law firm of Godfrey & Kahn.

She earned her law and undergraduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and studied at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Aix-en-Provence, France. She resides in Whitefish Bay with her husband and three children.

Schulz named vice chair of Foley’s Sports Industry Team

Kevin Schulz has been appointed vice chair of Foley & Lardner’s Sports Industry Team.

In this role, Schulz will work with Sports Industry Team co-chairs Mary Braza and Irwin Raij to enhance the comprehensive legal and business solutions Foley offers to professional, collegiate and amateur sports organizations and related businesses.

Schulz has experience representing and counseling clients in the sports industry, including professional sports teams, owners and acquirers of professional sports teams, a professional sports league, colleges, sponsors and media companies. His practice encompasses many aspects of the sports industry and his primary focus is on M&A and commercial matters.
