MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Department of Justice is trying to persuade the U.S. Supreme Court to stay out of the state’s voter photo identification case.

The American Civil Liberties Union and allied groups filed a federal lawsuit in 2011 challenging a Republican law requiring photo ID at the polls. A federal appeals court ruled in October the mandate was valid but the ACLU has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to take the case.

The DOJ filed a response Friday urging the justices not to get involved. The agency argued courts across the country have upheld voter ID laws and there’s no pressing need for the high court to take up the issue absent conflict. The agency also argued a challenge to Texas’ voter ID requirements would make a better case for review.
