Laura Stack’s clients call her at some of the worst times of their lives.
The attorney at Cordell & Cordell PC, Milwaukee, helps those facing divorce, paternity questions, custody changes or other post-judgment family law related issues.
“I enjoy working with good people at what is a bad time in their life,” Stack said. “I walk a fine line between being a therapist and being a lawyer. There’s a lot of high emotion and I work with clients to make sure they’re doing the right thing legally.”
Stack interacts a great deal with her clients, something she said she finds gratifying.
“I meet with people on a daily basis,” she said. “Sometimes I only work with a person once just before a court representation while other times, cases can go on a long time and I get to know them quite well.”
As a family law attorney, Stack said she winds up in court a couple of times a week.
“I like having that opportunity,” she said. “Family law is very interesting. There’s a set of laws in place, but every case is different because of the various circumstances.”
The daughter of an attorney, Stack said she grew up knowing she wanted a career in law. While attending Marquette University Law School, she worked with the State Public Defender’s Office in Waukesha County helping represent juveniles. She also worked for the Legal Aid Society in the Guardian ad Litem’s division at the Milwaukee County Children’s Court.
“That experience really got me interested in family law,” she said.
