EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) — A western Wisconsin man facing a felony child abuse charge is accused of hitting his 8-year-old son with a belt and then ordering the boy not to tell others because Minnesota Vikings football player Adrian Peterson got in trouble for disciplining his son with a wooden switch.

Lucas Carey of Lincoln made an initial court appearance Monday in Eau Claire County Circuit Court on charges of child abuse for intentionally causing harm. The judge ordered him to have no contact with his two children or their mother.

On Friday, Carey’s son told a sheriff’s deputy that his father disciplined him four days earlier for punching his 6-year-old sister, according to a criminal complaint. The boy said Carey caused “blood red” welts after spanking him several times with a belt, the complaint said.

The 8-year-old told police his father had spanked him in the past but never caused welts, according to the complaint. Carey told his son not to tell anyone because they wouldn’t understand and could call the police, the Leader-Telegram reported. He also told the boy that Peterson got in trouble after spanking his 4-year-old son, according to the complaint.

Peterson pleaded no contest to misdemeanor reckless assault Nov. 4, and was later suspended without pay for the rest of the season by the National Football League. He has since appealed the suspension.

Carey told an officer he was hoping to teach his son a lesson but didn’t mean to leave any marks, according to the complaint, and that he put cream on his son’s welts.

Carey’s son also told police his father apologized to him and didn’t mean to hit him that hard, according to the complaint.

An email seeking comment was sent Wednesday to the attorney representing Carey. He’s scheduled to return to court in mid-January.
