La Crosse man on trial in fatal Kwik Trip stabbing

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) — The defense attorney for a man accused of a fatal stabbing at a Kwik Trip in La Crosse is telling jurors the defendant acted in self-defense.

Prosecutors say Mitrel Anderson killed DeMario Lee outside the convenience store restroom in June 2013 by swinging an unidentified object into the side of his head. Anderson contends Lee and two others threatened and assaulted him inside the restroom.

The defense will try to convince jurors in La Crosse County Circuit Court that Anderson was justified in using deadly force to save his own life. Prosecutors argue Anderson’s level of force wasn’t necessary.

Investigators found Anderson and his girlfriend in Madison using cellphone records and arrested them the following day. Anderson’s girlfriend, Brittany Jones, was sentenced to a year in prison.
