MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Milwaukee County’s top prosecutor won’t ask a judge to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate his rationale for launch a probe into whether conservative groups illegally coordinated with Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s campaign.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Friday that John Chisholm sent Milwaukee County Chief Judge Jeffrey Kremers a letter on Oct. 8 saying he would not ask for such a special prosecutor.

Chisholm opened a so-called John Doe investigation in 2012 to probe whether organizations including Wisconsin Club for Growth illegally coordinated with Walker’s recall campaign in 2011 and 2012.

Wisconsin Club for Growth Director Eric O’Keefe sent Chisholm a letter last month demanding that Chisholm ask judge to appoint a special prosecutor to look into Chisholm’s motives.
