MILWAUKEE (AP) — A state social worker who fathered the child of a client is being sued in federal court in Milwaukee.

The caseworker, Peter Nelsen, testified Monday he had repeated sexual relations with the woman and when she became pregnant, pressured her to have an abortion.

Nelsen was assigned to investigate allegations of child maltreatment at Theola Nealy’s home. She gave birth to Nelsen’s daughter in August 2008. He retains full custody of the girl.

The Journal Sentinel reports Nealy wants $15 million in damages. At issue is whether Nelsen was working within the scope of his employment when he had a relationship with Nealy. If so, the state could be liable for damages.

Nealy resigned from his state job in April 2009.
