Female Republicans want Happ endorsement retracted (UPDATE)

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A group of female GOP lawmakers are demanding Emily’s List retract its endorsement of Democratic attorney general hopeful Susan Happ.

Happ, Jefferson County’s district attorney, won the endorsement in March. The Washington-based group helps elect Democratic women who support abortion rights.

Five female Republican legislators sent a letter Tuesday to Emily’s List saying Happ doesn’t deserve the endorsement. They pointed out Happ’s office last year deferred prosecution of an alleged sex offender after he bought Happ’s house and she argued for a light sentence for a child molester while she was working as a defense attorney.

Happ’s campaign said she’s a tough prosecutor who has put sex predators behind bars and criminal defendants still have right to an attorney in America.

An Emily’s List spokeswoman says Republicans are desperate to stop Happ’s campaign.
