Green Bay (AP) — A Green Bay man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for killing the 2-year-old son of his girlfriend.
Thirty-year-old Nicholas Willies was convicted of second-degree reckless homicide in the January 2013 death of Alex Fountain, who died of head and abdominal injuries.
His attorney, Raj Singh, said Willies took responsibility by pleading no contest in June, saving the family the pain of a trial.
At his sentencing Monday, Willies apologized to the Fountain family.
But the boy’s mother, Juanita Fountain, said Willies robbed the world of a beautiful child who loved to smile. Looking toward Willies, she recounted watching Alex stop breathing and die.
Judge Marc Hammer told Willies he shouldn’t have been caring for Alex or anyone else because he’s incapable of caring for anyone but himself.
