Van Hollen: Judge erred in striking down voter ID

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says a district judge made several errors when he struck down a state law requiring that voters show photo identification at the polls.

U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman struck down the law in April. He says it violated the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection, in part because it imposes an unfair burden on low-income and minority voters.

Van Hollen’s office is appealing the ruling. In a brief filed Monday, he cites what he says are errors in Adelman’s decision.

Van Hollen said the judge called the law unconstitutional even after acknowledging that more than 90 percent of Wisconsin voters already have IDs.

He also said the court speculated on a correlation between race and the likelihood of having an ID, even though no testimony demonstrated such a relationship.
