WAUPACA, Wis. (AP) — Family and friends of a teen killed by an alleged drunken driver in Waupaca County two years ago say they’re upset with how slowly the case has proceeded.

A WLUK-TV report says 18-year-old Dylan Thorne was killed in July 2012.

Thirty-eight-year-old Heather D. Schmidt of New London was charged last month with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. She made her first court appearance Friday.

Family friend Tina Albers said it’s been devastating for Thorne’s family to know Schmidt has been walking free for 20 months while they didn’t get to say goodbye to Dylan.

District attorney John Snider declined to say why it took so long to file charges.

A message left with Schmidt’s public defender, Troy Nielsen, on Sunday was not immediately returned.
