ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A St. Paul man convicted of killing his wife and dumping her body in the Mississippi River is appealing his conviction and sentence.

Jeffery Trevino was sentenced in November to 27 years in prison for the murder of 30-year-old Kira Steger. Trevino’s sentence was nearly twice the maximum recommended by state sentencing guidelines.

The Star Tribune reports a notice of appeal was filed Thursday in Ramsey County.

A jury convicted Trevino last October of second-degree unintentional murder and acquitted him of second-degree intentional murder, meaning jurors didn’t believe he planned the murder.

Steger, who grew up near Wausau, Wis., was last seen alive in public on a date night with Trevino at the Mall of America on Feb. 21. Her body was recovered from the Mississippi in May.
