DARLINGTON, Wis. (AP) — A Waukesha man convicted of beating three people to death in a western Wisconsin farmhouse will spend the rest of his life in a mental institution.

A Wisconsin State Journal report says 31-year-old Jaren Kuester sat stoically through testimony Friday from the victim’s relatives.

Before sentencing Kuester apologized for the slayings and said he’d lost touch with reality. He says he was confused and that he never imagined anything like this happening.

Prosecutors say he broke into the rural farmhouse in April and killed the victims with a fireplace poker.

Lafayette County prosecutor Kate Findley says the killings were among the most vicious crimes ever committed in the county. She asked the judge to sentence Kuester to three consecutive life commitments.
