More than 100 people received fraudulent emails stating they had to appear “in the court of Washington,” according to a news release from the Director of State Courts’ office.
Washington County Clerk of Circuit Court Theresa Russell said her office has received multiple calls about the email messages. Similar scams have been reported nationwide since December, according to the release.
The director’s office is warning residents and attorneys to be wary of the emails. The messages may contain viruses or malware, the release states.
Those who want to find out about an upcoming court appearance can find the information at www.wicourts.gov or by calling a local clerk of court’s office.
