Man loses bid for reduced sentence for murder

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) – A Lake County judge has denied a motion seeking to reduce the 105-year prison sentence given a Wisconsin man convicted of a 2007 murder and attempted murder.

Prosecutors said 30-year-old Montago Suggs of Kenosha desperately needed money when he entered a Waukegan check cashing store, confronted 22-year-old Melinda Morrell, and demanded a key to cash drawers. Prosecutors said Suggs later shot Morrell execution-style in the back of the head.

Judge Daniel Shanes last year sentenced Suggs to 80 years in prison for the slaying and 30 years for the attempted murder. The sentences are consecutive.

The Daily Herald in Arlington Heights reports defense attorney Keith Grant filed a motion Tuesday to reconsider the sentence. Shanes’ denial allows Suggs to appeal the conviction and sentencing with the state appellate court.
