Wis. high court picks up 12 cases

The state Supreme Court accepted a dozen cases for review Monday.

A news release from the Wisconsin Courts system states that some are the cases include:

• Masri v. LIRC and Medical College of Wisconsin, where the justices justices will examine whether an unpaid intern is considered an employee protected by the state’s health care worker protection statute.

• Force v. American Family, where the court will look at several issues surrounding wrongful death claims following a fatal car crash.

• Brandenburg v. Luethi, where the justices will seek to define what “inherently dangerous” work means as it pertains to independent contractor’s torts and a principal’s liability.

• State v. Purtell, where the issue is whether a search of a defendant’s a computer is supported by reasonable grounds to believe the computers contained contraband.

• State v. Matasek, at issue is whether a judge can withhold judgment on expunction until after a defendant finishes his or her probation.

• State v. Rocha-Mayo, which pertains to the introduction into evidence of a preliminary breath test for alcohol that is not approved for evidential use in Wisconsin, which was not given by a police officer.

• State v. Williams, which involves a mandatory minimum prison sentence for OWI seventh offense or more and whether it’s prohibited in from being imposed.

• Waranka v. Wadena Ins. Co., which asks whether laws regarding the terms and limits of a wrongful death claim should apply.

• Adams v. Northland Equipment Co., which pertains to the standard and procedures judges use in certain worker’s compensation cases.

• Williams v. Valued Services, which deals with issues surrounding short-term consumer loans.

• State v. Wantland, which deals with search procedures law enforcement uses and what to do if a passenger asks about a warrant.

The court denied the following petitions:

  • Patrick J.T. v. Shelly S.
  • State v. Howard
  • State v. Moseley
  • State v. Maaddox
  • State v. Wiley
  • Rhodes v. Meisner
  • State v. Walker
  • State v. Jackson
  • Westrich v. Memorial Health Center
  • State v. Klotz
  • Ronald J.R. v. Alexis L.A.
  • State v. Griep
