MILWAUKEE (AP) — A Milwaukee man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for the hit-and-run death of a newly engaged graduate student.
After serving his prison time, 48-year-old Edwood Hastings will be on supervised release for 10 years.
Hastings was sentenced Tuesday in Milwaukee County court. He faced up to 25 years in prison and fines of up to $100,000 in the death last August of 32-year-old Andrea Barringer.
Barringer was crossing a street on Milwaukee’s East Side when she was fatally struck. Hastings turned himself in to police and later pleaded no contest to hit-and-run causing death.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the defense recommended a suspended three-year sentence, with a year in jail as a condition of probation.
Barringer had gotten engaged two days before her death.
