A Madison attorney who robbed a credit union is suspended from practicing law for three years, the state Supreme Court ruled Tuesday.

Randi Hubatch, 50, is serving a two-year prison sentence at the Oshkosh Correctional Institution after pleading guilty to an armed robbery charge in February.

According to the court document, Hubatch “donned a Bucky Badger hat” and robbed the Summit Credit Union in Madison of $500. According to a criminal complaint, he passed a note that said he had a gun. He later told police he only had a Star Wars plastic toy gun in his pocket, according to the complaint.

Within the following week, after being spotted publicly wearing the Bucky Badger hat, Hubatch confessed to a Madison detective that he had robbed the credit union, saying that he owed $250,000 in student loans and thought “that the bank would not care about $500,” the criminal complaint states.

The Office of Lawyer Regulation filed a complaint against Hubatch in July, and he agreed to stipulate to the complaint and accept a three-year suspension.

Hubatch graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 2004. His law license has been suspended since Oct. 31, 2007, for failure to pay State Bar dues. He has not previously been the subject of professional discipline, according to court records.
