MADISON, Wis. (AP) – A bipartisan bill in the state Legislature would curtail the growing practice by police in Wisconsin of recording and storing civilian license plate images.

The bill circulated Tuesday would allow police to turn on cameras that capture license plate information only during the investigation of a crime. The Wisconsin State Journal reports Wednesday that the bill would also prohibit sharing the stored information with non-government entities and require data destruction within 48 hours, unless it was necessary for a criminal investigation.

The cameras are able to record the date, time and location of every passing vehicle.

The State Journal reported in July that several police agencies in Wisconsin have vehicles equipped with the cameras recording images 24 hours a day.
