Ex-McDonald’s worker sentenced in sandwich spitting case

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (AP) — A 24-year-old former McDonald’s restaurant employee who prosecutors say spit into a police officer’s sandwich in Michigan has been sentenced to at least 29 months behind bars.

The Daily News of Iron Mountain reports Dalton Ursulean of Niagara, Wis., learned his punishment Monday in Dickinson County District Court.

Ursulean apologized during the hearing, saying he wants to “actually do right.” Defense lawyer Geoffrey Sparks says Ursulean now recognizes that his actions were “dumb and disgusting.”

Ursulean earlier pleaded no contest to placing harmful objects in food. A no contest plea isn’t an admission of guilt but is treated as such at sentencing.

On Aug. 25, 2012, authorities say Ursulean spit in a sandwich ordered by an officer from the Oscar Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.
