MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A state appeals court has ruled against a former Milwaukee school-bus driver who sued after a TV station revealed she’d been convicted of misdemeanor prostitution eight years earlier.

In a decision released Tuesday, the appeals court said a lower court properly ruled against Melissa Dumas because her conviction was a matter of public record.

Milwaukee TV station TMJ-4 aired a report in April 2012 in which a reporter confronted Dumas with records of her conviction. She was eventually fired.

She sued the reporter and the station’s parent company, Journal Communications Inc., alleging invasion of privacy and other claims. She lost that case, in part because of First Amendment protections.

Messages left with Dumas’ lawyer and Journal Communications were not immediately returned.
