Man sentenced after scheme to use fake UPC codes

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) – A federal judge in Iowa sentenced a Wisconsin man to more than a year in prison after he pleaded guilty to printing his own UPC codes in a scheme to pay lower prices at stores.

Judge Linda R. Reade on Wednesday sentenced 27-year-old Jeremy J. Fishnick, of Lancaster, Wis., to 14 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He also must pay more than $33,000 in restitution.

In a plea agreement, Fishnick acknowledged that from July 2012 to November 2012 he used a computer and printer to create fraudulent UPC codes on adhesive labels. He then went to stores and covered actual codes with UPC labels listing lower prices.

Fishnick admitted fraudulently buying items in Dubuque, Maquoketa, Anamosa, Cedar Rapids, Coralville, Monticello, Iowa, and Prairie Du Chien, Wis.
