MADISON, Wis. (AP) – A southeastern Wisconsin prosecutor has created a campaign committee to run for attorney general.

Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel filed a campaign registration statement with the state Government Accountability Board on Wednesday. The statement allows him to raise campaign money and enables him to get on the ballot if he can collect at least 2,000 signatures on his nomination papers.

Schimel hasn’t formerly announced he is a candidate, but the registration essentially signals he’s running. Schimel said in a statement he is preparing a formal announcement.

Incumbent Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced this week he won’t seek re-election next year.
