The Assembly’s judiciary committee will hold a public hearing in Milwaukee on Friday for a bill that seeks to overhaul the state’s criminal code for the first time since 1969.

The bill, introduced last month by Rep. Jim Ott, R-Mequon, seeks to clean up the code’s language and organization, as well as codify practices that have long been justified by legal precedence.

The public hearing will be at 10 a.m. at Marquette University’s Law School, 1215 W. Michigan St., Milwaukee.

So far, no lobbying groups have formally supported or opposed the bill. But some attorneys and organizations from throughout the state have expressed concern over a proposed elimination of preliminary hearings in felony cases.

The bill was put together by the Wisconsin Judicial Council, a Legislature-mandated group tasked with making recommendations about court proceedings. Ott serves on the council.

The notice for the hearing asks that those planning to testify submit detailed written testimony to the committee. At the hearing, testimony is encouraged to be a brief overview of written comments.
