MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Republican lawmaker from southwestern Wisconsin has decided to resign.
Rep. Jeff Stone of Greendale issued a statement Thursday announcing he plans to step down on Oct. 14. The statement didn’t offer a reason why.
Stone was first elected to the Assembly in 1998. He authored a law in 2011 that required voters to show photo identification at the polls. A number of groups have challenged the law in court. The 4th District Court of Appeals has upheld it but a Dane County judge’s injunction blocking the requirements still stands in another case. State attorneys have appealed.
The 2nd District Court of Appeals has yet to rule in that case.
