Nicole Rosen says she is in the minority among attorneys: She works in the same practice area that drew her to law school in the first place and has a personal connection to her chosen field.
An associate in the health care group at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren SC, Rosen said she always was intrigued with the way hospitals and health care providers worked, but, without a “science mind,” found law as her way in professionally.
Personally, the Rosen family had regular firsthand experience with the patient side of health care when Rosen’s brother, Jeremy, went through an eight-year battle with cancer. He died two months before she started studying law at Marquette University, and, Rosen said, the varying levels of care her brother received from different providers only emboldened her to stay focused on the field.
“There are so many laws governing what can be done,” Rosen said. “To hear a doctor say, ‘I can’t do that because it’s against the law …’
“There are things you assume as a patient, where you wouldn’t think there’d be something in place telling doctors what they can and cannot do.”
Clearing up the cloudy legal problems, she said, is a substantial and rewarding portion of her practice.
“You know that usually, there’s one place you’re trying to get to,” Rosen said. “But it’s better to analyze it and try to find the best way.”
