SUPERIOR, Wis. (AP) — A Douglas County sheriff’s deputy has been cleared of possible charges in his use of deadly force.

District Attorney Dan Blank determined Lt. Christopher Hoyt fatally shot 21-year-old Andrew Closson after Closson pointed a rifle at the deputy on New Year’s Day. Blank says Hoyt was faced with a deadly threat and responded in a reasonable manner.

The Duluth News Tribune says Hoyt was responding to a report of shots fired at a residence in Gordon when he encountered Closson hitchhiking along Highway 53. Authorities say Hoyt got out of his vehicle, told Closson to show his hands, then fired three times as Closson pointed a long gun at the deputy.
