Milwaukee County’s Division of Audit will review the cause of and response to a July fire in the courthouse basement that forced the building’s closure for a week.

The courthouse was not completely reopened until July 24. The fire caused an estimated $2 million in damage.

Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Marina Dimitrijevic and Supervisor Michael Mayo Sr. requested a “financial and programmatic audit of the Courthouse fire incident,” according to a memo sent to Jerome Heer, the county’s auditor.

Heer said he does not know what the timeframe will be for the audit, though he is expected to attend Thursday’s meeting of the County Board’s Judiciary, Safety and General Services Committee to respond to the request.
