A Senate bill proposed Friday would prohibit employers from asking job applicants for information about a criminal conviction before the applicant has been selected for an interview.
If the bill passes, an employer who asks for information about a conviction prior to the interview process would be discriminating against certain applicants.
The Legislative Reference Bureau said employers would still be allowed to let applicants know that people with certain convictions may be barred by the company or by law from taking a particular job.
Sen. Lena Taylor, D-Milwaukee, is the bill’s sponsor. The bill has not yet been introduced in the Assembly.
