MUKWONAGO, Wis. (AP) – The Mukwonago School District is standing firm on a decision to ignore the state’s order to replace its Indian nickname and logo.

A law enacted in 2010 authorizes the state Department of Public Instruction to require a school district to change its race-based nicknames if one formal complaint is filed. Mukwonago could be fined $1,000 a day for defying the order.

A lawyer for the district, Sam Hall, said Mukwonago is prepared to fight any fines and is seeking a legislative, rather than legal remedy.

The Journal Sentinel says legislation to repeal the 2010 law has 20 sponsors in the Assembly and six in the Senate. A similar bill failed to make it past a committee in 2011.
