MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Madison woman has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for fatally injuring her 3-year-old son.

Maria Castillo-Dominguez was earlier found guilty of first-degree reckless homicide in the 2011 death of her son, Luis Angel. The 24-year-old mother continues to maintain it was her boyfriend who caused the toddler’s fatal injuries. He was not charged.

The State Journal reports Castillo-Dominguez told Madison detectives that she threw Luis against a wall at the couple’s apartment because he had disobeyed her and took some gum.

Prosecutors say the mother failed to get proper medical care for her child as his condition deteriorated. Eventually she and her boyfriend took the child to a hospital. The boy died several days later.
