The Wisconsin Attorney General’s Office found Schmitt Challenges Inc., Beaver Dam, and owner Carl Schmitt liable for $70,000 in fines and court costs related to environmental violations.

The violations occurred at Schmitt’s closed landfill in Lowell, according to a news release from J.B. Van Hollen’s office, and included illegally burning solid waste, landfilling waste in a wetland and failing to conduct environmental monitoring.

The judgment against Schmitt included stipulations that he restore the wetland and bring the closed landfill into compliance with environmental monitoring requirements, among other things. Future violations will incur fines of as much as $20,000 for burning solid waste and $10,000 for failing to monitor groundwater or landfill gas production, according to the release.
