Attorneys have placed No. 117 in CareerCast.com’s 2013 ranking of 200 careers. Not great, but not bad.
We should have kept on reading. Like, all the way to the bottom.
Finishing dead last on that list, at No. 200, was “Reporter (Newspaper),” those humble scribes such as us.
Some of the jobs that finished behind attorney, but ahead of newspaper reporter, included ironworker, economist, child care worker, furniture upholsterer, taxi driver, bartender, janitor, welder, garbage collector, dockworker, maid, dishwasher, corrections officer, roofer, mail carrier and lumberjack.
That’s right, we finished behind maids. And bartenders. (Although it does remind us of our favorite bartender joke: What do you get when you cross an elephant with a bartender? An elephant that steals money from the till.)
The results were reported in the Wall Street Journal, but we want to stress that the list was compiled by ostensible career experts, not by disgruntled newspaper reporters.
So, next time you feel like complaining about the travails of a career as an attorney, remember that it could be worse. You could be us.
