TOWN OF MENASHA, Wis. (AP) — The district attorney in Winnebago County is promising a “very thorough” investigation into whether a town of Menasha police officer was justified when he shot and killed an armed 66-year-old man.

Officers were sent to an apartment complex Friday evening after Wilson A. Lutz threatened to harm himself. Police say he was distraught over a relationship. Police say an officer with 17 years of experience shot Lutz twice when he refused orders to drop his gun and pointed it at the officers.

District Attorney Christian Gossett tells the Appleton Post-Crescent he expects the investigation will be expedited based on the interests of the community and the police department.

The name of the officer hasn’t been released. He’s on paid leave, which is standard in such cases.
