MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Four finalists have been named from a field of seven former judges for a spot on the state board that oversees elections.

An independent committee on Tuesday recommended Judge Gary Carlson of Medford, Judge Harold Froehlich of Appleton, Judge William Jennaro of Milwaukee, and Judge Elsa Lamelas of Shorewood to fill a vacancy on the Government Accountability Board.

The slot will be open when Judge Thomas Cane of Wausau’s term ends on May 1.

The names of the four finalists are headed to Gov. Scott Walker, who musts appoint one of them. Whoever Walker selects must also be confirmed by the Republican-controlled Senate.

The board is comprised of six former judges who serve staggered six-year terms. They oversee elections and enforce campaign finance and ethics laws in Wisconsin.
