MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Wisconsin’s top cop says the Connecticut school shootings may have been unpreventable.

Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen told The Associated Press in a Tuesday interview it appears Adam Lanza didn’t own the guns he used and broke into Sandy Hook Elementary.

Van Hollen, who got the state’s first concealed-carry permit last year, has led the state Justice Department through several mass shootings in Wisconsin since he took office. He said there aren’t any simple ways to prevent them.

He said states need to invest in police liaison officers in schools but he wouldn’t say if assault weapons should be banned or not. He said he’s a big proponent of the right to bear arms but that doesn’t mean there’s no place for restrictions.
