Waukesha County is seeking bids for a study to help it determine whether to renovate its 1959-built courthouse or build a new one.
A timeline included in the request for proposals shows the county’s intent to hire a firm to conduct the study by mid-February in order to have a completed study by Aug. 1. The RFP cites space issues at the courthouse, which has no room for expansion, and concerns about courtroom security as the impetus for the study. The majority of the building’s mechanical infrastructure, excluding its boiler and chiller, remains intact, according to the RFP, but is outdated.
The courthouse houses the judiciary department, the clerk of courts, family court counseling, the county’s district attorneys, the County Board and other offices.
The RFP also details the county’s desire for an alternate study that would explore the feasibility of building a combined county courthouse and city hall on county property. Waukesha City Hall was built in 1963, according to the RFP, which houses 10 city departments.
The city has received a completed study detailing the possibility of combining dispersed city offices into a multipurpose municipal building, according to the RFP.
The county has approved $250,000 in its capital budget to complete the original study, according to the RFP, and the city is expected to fund the alternate study.
Proposals are due by 2 p.m. Jan. 15 to the county’s Department of Administration Purchasing Division.
