Ex-sports league official accused of theft

By: Associated Press//November 27, 2012

APPLETON, Wis. (AP) – The former treasurer of a Fox Valley youth sports league has pleaded not guilty to allegations that he embezzled nearly $20,000 from the organization to support a gambling addiction.

A Post-Crescent of Appleton report says Rodney K. Schreiber Jr. entered the plea Monday to felony theft, which carries a maximum prison sentence of five years.

Prosecutors say the 41-year-old withdrew nearly $14,000 from the league account using mostly casino ATMs. He’s also accused of using league money to buy a computer without permission.

Schreiber had been the only person authorized to withdraw money from the account. League officials say they now have several people overseeing the financial accounts.

Defense attorney David Templeton says he thinks a plea agreement will be reached, avoiding the need for a trial.
